I think that elasticated waistbands have gone a long way in helping us to put up with gaining weight over the years. When I was younger I had skirts and trousers and jeans which were not elasticated, all of which were great indicators that I was putting on a few pounds because they became tight and uncomfortable. This made me adapt my eating quickly and in no time I would be back to normal.
Now things are elasticated and we wear a lot of leggings, it's easy to gain weight as these will just accommodate us and we are slower to notice that we are gaining weight, so then there is more to lose.
If we had to wear clothes without elastic I think we would be more mindful about our bodies and think twice about what we ate.
